Huntley, Marengo mayors seek re-election

Two mayors in a rapidly developing part of McHenry County have decided to run for re-election: Chuck Sass in Huntley and Don Lockhart in Marengo.

Candidates running for nonpartisan local races in April in Huntley and Marengo could pick up election petitions for the first time Tuesday.

Sass and Lockhart picked up theirs in the morning, city clerk officials in both towns said.

The two mayors have until Dec. 24 to collect and submit enough signatures to be placed on the April ballot.

Marengo City Clerk Constance Boxleitner picked up her election packet.

Huntley Trustees Pam Fender, Ron Hahn and John Piwko all have terms expiring in March. None have picked up election information.

Village Clerk Rita McMahon said she expects candidates to trickle in to get forms before filling signatures in December.

Sass will look to preside for four more years over Huntley’s economic growth. He has been Huntley mayor since 2001 and served as a trustee for four years before that.

Working alongside village staff and trustees, Sass helped usher in a bevy of development projects while the village with country charm boomed in population during the 2000s.

During his tenure, the village has broken ground on a full interchange at Interstate 90 and Route 47 and the widening of Route 47 to eight lanes.

Lockhart is seeking his third consecutive term as mayor of Marengo during a crucial time for the city.

Since the summer, city staff have been planning ways to acquire land near Route 23 and I-90 and entice the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority to build a full interchange there.

The former McHenry County sheriff’s sergeant defeated three opponents, including former Mayor Dennis Hammortree, in 2005 for his first term as mayor. He ran unopposed in 2009.
