Police: Traffic stop leads to gunfire exchange

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — Authorities say a southwestern Illinois police officer was injured and a motorist hospitalized with gunshot wounds after an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop.

Illinois State Police say the 27-year-old driver was shot several times and taken to a St. Louis hospital after the confrontation early Tuesday. There's no word on his condition.

The Fairview Heights police officer suffered a wound to his hand. He was treated at a hospital.
