WOODSTOCK – Upgraded charges have been filed against a Crystal Lake man charged with DUI three years after being convicted of driving a snowmobile while drunk and crashing, killing his friend, TV anchorman Randy Salerno.

Scott D. Hirschey, 49, had been charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence as well as several traffic offenses following his arrest on July 27 by Crystal Lake Police.

Prosecutors dropped those counts and refiled the case against Hirschey, this time charging him with felony counts of DUI because of his criminal record.

He was arrested again on Monday and released after posting bond a few hours later.

In July 2009, Hirschey was sentenced in Wisconsin to three years of probation after pleading no contest to homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.

Hirschey also was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service, undergo alcohol and psychological and grief assessment, and submit to any recommended counseling.

Salerno, a 45-year-old Crystal Lake native and a CBS 2 Chicago morning news anchor, was riding on the back of a snowmobile built for one person that Hirschey was driving on Jan. 24, 2008. Hirschey lost control and crashed about 20 miles north of Eagle River, Wis.
