Horse euthanized after being struck by car

A horse had to be euthanized Friday after it wandered onto to Route 176 and was struck by a car, police said.

McHenry County Sheriff officials responded to an accident in Seneca Township involving a horse at 1:10 a.m. near the 15100 block of Route 176. Police called the owner and a veterinarian, who determined that the horse's injuries were too severe for treatment.

The horse then was euthanized at the scene, police said in a news release. It was one of several that had escaped from a nearby home. The passengers in the car were not injured.
