McHenry’s Opatrny, C-G run 
to victory

PEORIA – McHenry’s Lauren Opatrny bested 306 other runners Saturday to take the top spot at the Peoria Central Invitational at Detweiller Park.

Her time of 17:23.06 was almost five seconds faster than her closest competitor.

However, Cary-Grove was the area’s best team at the meet with 240 points and a fifth-place finish. The Trojans were led by 11th-place finisher Talia Duzey in 17:58.02.

McHenry (514) came in 18th followed by Huntley (584) in 19th in the 43-team field. Huntley was led by Kate Mitchell and her 44th place finish.

Downers Grove South won with 69 points.

Pat Savage Invitational: At Skokie, Woodstock (112) finished third behind several strong individual performances and Dundee Crown (217) placed ninth in the meet hosted by Niles West.

Woodstock’s Maura Beattie recorded the fastest time in the meet by more than 20 seconds with a time of 18:22.62. Teammate Sarah Semmen took seventh with a time of 19:42.85.


Crystal Lake South Invitational: At Crystal Lake, the Gators took two victories, defeating Marian Central, 5-0, and New Trier, 4-1.

Julia Thome won both her No. 1 singles matches in straight sets for the Gators as did the duo of Hannah Goschey and Becca Kolarczyk at No. 3 doubles.

Marian Central also lost to New Trier, 4-1, with Abby Waters taking the lone win for the Hurricanes.


Stevenson Invitational: At Lincolnshire, McHenry finished third with a record of 3-2. The Warriors defeated Wheeling, Vernon Hills and Grant and lost to Loyola Academy and Stevenson.

Brittany Avots led McHenry (11-13) with 33 kills over the five games, while Haley Kornfeind notched 36 digs.

Asics Challenge: At Chicago, Huntley won one of its five matches, defeating Lone Peak (Utah), 25-17, 25-20. Emily Westermeyer led the Red Raiders (7-12) with nine kills in the victory, and Rachel Shores added 17 digs.

Cary-Grove won two of its five matches, defeating Sandburg, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23, and Lone Peak, 25-15, 25-16. Alex Larsen led the Trojans (12-11) with 33 kills over five matches, and Jess Bartczyszyn notched 100 assists.
