Athlete of the Week
Crystal Lake South, Junior
The quarterback-defensive back had a hand in all four South touchdowns Friday as the Gators defeated Prairie Ridge, 28-7, in their Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game.
Rogers ran for a pair of second-quarter touchdowns, then hit Brandon Madoni for a 43-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
Rogers put the finishing touches on the win with an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. South, trying to make the playoffs for a 12th consecutive season, is 3-3 with three games remaining.
Good sign: Johnsburg lost its 18th consecutive game Friday, 27-21, to Hampshire, but the Skyhawks had reason to feel good about their performance.
Johnsburg (0-6 overall, 0-4 FVC Fox) moved the ball well and rallied from a 21-8 deficit to tie at 21 in the third quarter. It took kickoff returns by Tim Jansen and Chris Calvin, both in the first quarter, for the Whip-Purs (3-3, 2-1) to beat the Skyhawks.
Fullback Christian Nugent had a big game with 18 carries for 105 yards for the Skyhawks.
Playoff look: Five victories are needed to qualify for the playoffs, while six assures teams of qualifying.
With three remaining games, undefeated Cary-Grove and Marian Central are guaranteed spots and are playing for very high seeds in Class 6A and Class 5A, respectively. Crystal Lake Central (5-1) also is in very good shape.
Huntley, Woodstock North and Richmond-Burton all are 4-2 and appear to be in good shape.
The interesting part comes with three 3-3 teams in the FVC Valley – Crystal Lake South, Dundee-Crown and Jacobs. Those three teams play in some combination each of the last three weeks. D-C visits South this week, South is at Jacobs in Week 8 and D-C hosts Jacobs in the final week.
