Our view: One color stands out

October is known for its colors.

There’s the gorgeous reds, oranges and yellows of fall leaves.

The orange pumpkins, black witches, and other colorful costumes that come with Halloween season.

And then there’s pink, the color of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Yes, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which began 28 years ago as a way to promote breast cancer awareness, share information about the disease, and provide greater access to screening services to women across the country.

In honor of the month, the Northwest Herald is again proud to partner with Centegra Health System to bring you a pink special section inside today’s newspaper. A portion of the proceeds from the special section will go to the Centegra Health System Foundation’s Breast Care Fund to benefit the Centegra Gavers Breast Center.

Breast cancer, sadly, touches most Americans in some direct or indirect way.

Some statistics from The American Cancer Society and BreastCancer.org:

• Breast cancer accounts for nearly one in three cancer cases diagnosed in women in the U.S.

• About one in eight U.S. women, nearly 12 percent, will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

• About 39,500 women will die of breast cancer this year.

• More than 225,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in 2012.

The best way for a woman to reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer remains early detection, through regular self-examinations and scheduling annual mammograms after the age of 40.

Join us today and the rest of this month in going pink. Let the women in your lives know how much you care about them.
