To the Editor:
Know when to hold them, know when to fold them. I think McHenry needs to follow its neighbors, such as Woodstock and Crystal Lake, and fold this one.
Video gaming is going to be just some additional problems for City Hall. If you do a little research, you will find that at least 60 percent of the 269 cities and villages in suburban Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties have local policies banning video poker. We should do the same; it’s not worth the gamble in our town.
From what I have read, it is not too late to get to your aldermen and let them know what you think of this idea. Our police department has more to worry about with embezzling and narcotics, and now we are going to give them something else to worry about? They don’t need the extra strain on their duties.
Few of the arguments for this is to keep money in McHenry that goes elsewhere and conveniences for those who need this fix to stay closer to home. Maybe so, but I would assume that the money that we get will simply be used for more officers in order to police the establishments.
The establishments have an easy way to increase patronage and that’s about it. There are better and safer ways to bring in clientele.
If you agree, you need to somehow get to your aldermen and let them know what you think. Let your word be heard!
