McHenry approves $58K for dog park

McHENRY– Plans to develop the city’s first dog park are moving ahead with fence installation and landscaping set to be complete by December.

The City Council at its meeting Monday night approved a $58,600 bid from Custom Built Commercial Fence, the lowest of seven bids, to fence what will be a four-acre dog park on a parcel adjacent to Kohl’s along Route 31.

Since August, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department has been working with 3D Design to prepare bid specifications and documents for the park, which the Grayslake firm estimated to cost between $81,648 and $102,000.

Earlier this year, the city worked with Kohl’s Illinois on an agreement that allows the city to use a portion of the department store’s parking lot in the McHenry Towne Center, 2450 N. Richmond Road, for public parking and access to the park.

Plans also call for a drinking fountain, a washing area for dogs near the parking lot’s entrance and a limestone path that meets Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

The path will connect the parking lot to a shelter inside the gates.

The dog park project is gaining “very good community support,” said Alderman Jeffrey Schaefer.

“And it’s nice to see that the pricing came in as they did.”

Meanwhile, parks staff has been removing brush, excess vegetation and debris from past farming at the site and construction adjacent to it, said Pete Merkel, director of parks and recreation.

Officials anticipate the dog park will open in spring.
