More publicity

To the Editor:

I’ve lost my mother and two brothers to the devastation of Alzheimer’s. I also have watched my sister and two sister-in-laws go through their indescribable hell as full-time caregivers. As a result, anytime I can share the need for support to help find a cure for this disease, I do it.

I knew the “McHenry County Walk to End Alzheimer’s” was planned for Sept. 30 at Three Oaks Recreation Area and waited to see the headlines and information. I was surprised, only a small note on Sept. 24, and I was on my way to Three Oaks before the Sept. 30 paper arrived with a short note in Section B.

At the walk, I was thrilled to see all the people that were walking, helping, and supporting with their pocketbooks. The place was filled with caring people and, yes, the parking lot was overfilled. Unfortunately, I was appalled when the list of sponsors was read to hear the Northwest Herald. How? Why? When so much information is available, it’s unbelievable for a sponsoring paper to not print a reasonable article beforehand so people could form a team, followed by a short reminder on Saturday. Hasn’t anyone on staff witnessed the suffering of this disease? I appreciate what was done, but please do better next year. We must find a cure. It’s the sixth-leading cause of death!
