Driver gets 3 years in fatal DUI crash

WOODSTOCK – The driver in a crash that left his cousin dead has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Servando Ayala, 20, of Cary, pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol.

About 1 a.m. April 7, Ayala had been driving a 1997 Ford Taurus on Elden Drive near Margaret Terrace in Cary when he hit a tree head-on.

His passenger, Pedro Ayala Jr., who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both men had to be freed from the car, and Servando Ayala was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition.

Assistant State's Attorney Dave Johnston said that the men had left a family party and were looking for another party at the time of the crash.
