Kankakee man gets 25 years for robbery

URBANA, Ill. — A Kankakee man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for taking $11 from an Urbana woman during a mugging last spring.

Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd sentenced 21-year-old Joseph Hairston on Thursday. A jury convicted Hairston of robbery in August for attacking the woman as she walked home from her job.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports that the judge told Hairston that people going home from work "shouldn't have to look over their shoulder in fear."

Prosecutors say the woman testified that she was grabbed from behind and dragged behind a building before handing over the $11 after her attacker threatened to kill her. She suffered scrapes and bruises but wasn't otherwise physically injured.
