McHenry County Historical Society hosts Cider Fest today

UNION – There is even more to see at this year’s Cider Fest, sponsored by the McHenry County Historical Society, at its museum today.

Throughout the day, Huntley Ambassador Girl Scout Sarah French will host an interactive children’s workshop to accompany her exhibit, “Girls and Women: Then and Now.”

The workshop offers interactive elements that enable visitors to experience firsthand what rural life was like for women and young girls in 20th-century McHenry County.

The public also is encouraged to visit the Girl Scout exhibit, marking the organization’s centennial, which will be closing at the end of October.

This display focuses on the history of Girl Scouting in McHenry County and features a collection of materials such as uniforms, handbooks, camping gear and novelty items.

The 35th annual Cider Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, 6422 Main St. in Union.

In addition to free access to the museum, guests will be treated to displays and demonstrations of old tools, courtesy of independent collectors and from members of the Midwest Tool collectors Association.

Visitors can listen to the sounds of Charlie B and Friends between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and watch a barn raising beginning at 12:30 p.m. Throughout the day, there will be harvest demonstrations, including broom making and old-fashioned cider making.

Apple baked goods and kettle corn will be among the food items on sale.

Books, antique clothing and hard-to-find items also will be on sale during the society’s biannual white elephant sale.

In addition to the museum, the Gannon family 1843 log cabin, the 1895 West Harmony one-room school and the newly updated mobile museum, The James, will be open for free all day.
