Sewer project in Johnsburg to slow traffic

JOHNSBURG – Motorists are encouraged to avoid a well-traveled area in Johnsburg over the next several weeks as a sewer collection system project continues.

Prep for sanitary sewer installation began last week along Fairview Avenue from Chapel Hill Road to Church Street.

Fairview Avenue will be closed to through traffic in that area through the beginning of November as crews ramp up their efforts.

Combined with ongoing utility work on Johnsburg Road east of Chapel Hill Road, the construction will likely cause motorist delays.

“A lot of traffic moves through that area, and this is going to slow things down,” Village Administrator Claudett Peters said. “If there is any way to avoid that area, we encourage people to do so.”

The more than $1 million project is being paid for with federal and state grant funding. Once complete, the village will be one step closer to allowing more than 400 residents the opportunity to connect to the sewer system.

“This project will enable us to extend sewers to people that need them,” Peters said. “The approach to allow residents to connect to this system is to make it available to subdivisions that reach out to us.”

Residents on Fairview Avenue will have access to and from their homes during construction.

Sunnyside Beach Drive as well as Long, Middle and Stubby avenues will be limited to local traffic only.

Johnsburg and Chapel Hill roads will be used as alternate routes for motorists.

The work is expected to be finished Nov. 16.
