CRYSTAL LAKE – McHenry County College’s Continuing Education Department will offer three baking and cake-decorating classes this fall.
Featured classes include holiday-themed cupcakes, beginning cake decorating and a holiday gingerbread house.
The following classes are available:
• Cupcake Temptations I: This two-hour workshop features decorating cupcakes for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. A list of needed supplies will be sent to participants before class. Beginning cake-decorating skills will help but are not required. This will be the first in a series of classes on cupcakes and decorating ideas. This course meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Room D158. The cost is $25. Use course ID: NCU S71 010 when registering.
• Cake Decorating I: Melody Stanko, a professional cake decorator for more than 14 years, will teach the basics of cake decorating. She will explain the equipment, supplies, types of frosting and how to prepare the best frosting. Participants will get hands-on experience with a variety of decorating techniques, including shells, rosettes, borders, basket weaving and piping. Plan to spend about $25 for supplies, which will be discussed at the first class. This course meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays, Oct. 19 through Nov. 16, in Room D158. The cost is $65. Use course ID: NCU S01 010 when registering.
• Holiday Gingerbread House: Participants will bring to class their baked gingerbread house pieces and a batch of royal icing. Then, they will “glue” the house together with pulled sugar and create decorations to cover the house. Bring a plate or cardboard to place under the house. The instructor will supply candies and other ideas. Feel free to bring any special decorations, along with a decorating bag or ziplock bag and a few frosting applicator tips to create more interesting designs. Take home the gingerbread creation the same day. The class takes place from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 1 in Room D154. The cost is $22. Use course ID: NCU S80 012 when registering.
