WOODSTOCK – Robin Doeden of Lake in the Hills has been named as CEO of the McHenry County Community Foundation.
Doeden started her new job Monday. Foundation board member John Small has been serving as interim CEO since January 2011 when its then CEO was let go.
"We wanted to change direction and look at different strategies on how to advance the foundation in the future," said Community Foundation board member Suzanne Hoban, the executive director of Family Health Partnership Clinic.
"We were very careful to find the absolute perfect fit," Hoban said of the search for a new CEO. "It was a really important decision for the board. A deliberative process."
Hoban called Doeden "extremely energetic with a broad range of experience in donor development and program development. And she lives in the county, which is a plus."
Hoban added that Doeden has "good energy, is thoughtful and detail oriented.
"She'll have a good customer focus on our donors, our nonprofits and the community at large."
Doeden most recently worked as executive director of the Chicagoland Lutheran Educational Foundation, based in Bensenville.
Prior to the educational foundation, Doeden served as director of development for Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.
Doeden has been a resident of Lake in the Hills for 10 years.
"Having lived here so long, I felt like I'm finally coming home," Doeden said. "It's an opportunity to help my close friends and neighbors. It's really a unique opportunity and I'm excited about that."
She said her main responsibilities as CEO will be fundraising, distributing grants and helping organizations across the county improve their fundraising.
"Writing them a check can only do so much," Doeden said of nonprofits that benefit from the Community Foundation. "We want to help them help themselves with fundraising. That's a huge benefit for them. We want to be a resource for nonprofit organizations across the county."
Doeden added that the foundation also will try to connect people and nonprofits.
"We will be very big on creating and building partnerships," she said. "We'll point them in the right direction for where to go for expertise."
Doeden said the recession has hurt fundraising. "It's been tough. It hasn't been easy. But giving is starting to come back. People still understand the importance of giving.
"I think people are smarter about giving. It's important to be very open about where the money is going. Transparency is very important right now."
Doeden said the board will have a strategic planning meeting on Oct. 16 to begin mapping its vision and mission for the future
"We want to set some priorities and set some goals," Doeden said. "We will set some specific areas of interest that are important to the county."
"We're a relatively young foundation," Doeden said. "I think we have finally reached the point to make big decision and big moves. And projects that we as a foundation are interested in."
