Our view: Senseless vandalism

Sometimes we’ve just got to ask aloud (or write here), what were they thinking?

What point was the vandal or vandals trying to make in damaging three iconic religious statues welcoming parishioners to St. Mary Catholic Church in McHenry?

Over the weekend, the hands on a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary were heavily damaged, and two angel statues weighing more than 300 pounds apiece were knocked over in front of the church.

The marble Virgin Mary statue that stands more than 4 feet tall recently was repaired for weather-related wear and tear.

The cost to repair the statues could be in the thousands of dollars. That’s trivial compared with the heartache likely felt by many parishioners, who have to be scratching their heads and asking the same question we are: Why?

There’s no financial benefit that can come from the vandalism, no windfall to be gained. More likely it’s some senseless, juvenile act of self-gratification.

“Hey, we destroyed a statue. And we made a lot of people feel really bad. Aren’t we cool?”

No, you’re not. You’re the opposite of cool.

As the Rev. Bob Balog told us earlier this week:

“It’s just sad that something like this would occur on church property. We just had everything replaced, and she was beautiful. Someone needs to say something to someone, somewhere.”

Hopefully, that someone who has information about the vandalism will come forward and call the McHenry Police Department at 815-363-2200.

Hopefully, the vandals will be caught and punished appropriately.
