Basement fire displaces 5 in Crystal Lake

CRYSTAL LAKE – A smokey basement fire late Tuesday displaced five residents of a Crystal Lake home, fire officials said.

Firefighters were called to a three-unit residence in the first block of South Williams Street about 11:30 p.m. All occupants had evacuated when the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department arrived, according to a news release.

The fire was contained to a laundry room in the basement, and damage was estimated at $10,000. No one was injured, but the home was declared uninhabitable until repairs are made. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire crews from McHenry Township, Nunda Rural, Cary, Huntley, Lakewood, East Dundee, Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Wonder Lake and Rehab 5 were called to assist Crystal Lake.
