Chicago aims for 'greenest' street in nation
CHICAGO — Chicago is trying to create the "greenest street in America" by using recycled material and designs that reduce wasted energy and water.
The Chicago Transportation Department says about one-quarter of material for the project along Blue Island Ave. and Cermak Rd. in the city's Pilsen neighborhood is recycled.
The road includes cement that's supposed to clean nitrogen oxide from the air. It's also designed to keep about 80 percent of rainfall from going into storm drains, and it includes LED lighting and solar power to reduce energy use.
