Letters to the Editor

More accountable

To the Editor:

Enough of these letters to the editor bashing the county executive form of government referendum. They label it another level of government and call it a czar position. What nonsense.

It is a well-established form of government that flourishes around our state, neighboring states, and across the country. It is desired because of the direct accountability it provides because of a direct election of the position. It demands greater transparency in government.

Please look at the powers of the office yourself. They are found online at Illinois Compiled Statutes 55 ILCS, Counties Code 5/2-5001. You can see for yourself that this position actually limits the power of the leader because he/she will need the advice and consent of the board to make most decisions. It is designed to make our leaders more accountable, which directly leads to lower property taxes.

The referendum that we will be voting on also has the built-in safeguard. The referendum specifically says that the county will not be home rule. That means that the County Board cannot raise your sales taxes without a voter referendum.

For the past 21 years, our County Board has raised your property taxes each year to the maximum amount allowed without any voter input. When you vote “yes” for the county executive position, those days of automatic tax increases are over.

Let’s protect the taxpayers and move to a more responsible, accountable government.
