Large American flag set to fly again Friday

Text Size: AaAaAaAaAa

CRYSTAL LAKE – The 30-by-60-foot American flag that flies over Crystal Lake and Rakow Road hasn't been waving in recent weeks because a cable snapped, city officials said.

Officials anticipate that the oversized flag will be back in service Friday when T-Mobile, the company that owns that flag pole-looking cellphone tower, will make the repairs, city officials said.

Once before the cable snapped. The cellphone company will make repairs to keep it from happening again, said George Koczwara, deputy city manager.

While the flag was down, it was sent to have fraying repaired at a cost of about $300,  Koczwara said. The city owns the flag, one of six provided by T-Mobile under an agreement with the city. The agreement also provides for T-Mobile to buy or repair the flags. New flags cost about $1,800 each.

The flag is on city-owned property at Wastewater Treatment Plant No. 2, 1100 Coventry Lane.  T-Mobile leases the land for its tower.
