McHenry County foreclosures continued their downward trend in September, according to RealtyTrac's Foreclosure Market Report.

A report released Thursday by Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac shows one of every 208 housing units in the county received a foreclosure filing in September 2012, compared to one of every 220 the previous month. Kane County's foreclosure rate was one in every 207 homes. Lake County's rate was one in every 256.

There are 5,442 foreclosure housing units in McHenry County, according to realtytrac.com. New foreclosure activity in September showed 95 housing units in Crystal Lake, 23 in Marengo, 61 in Woodstock, 38 in Huntley, 39 in Cary, 48 in Algonquin, 38 in Wonder Lake, 27 in Harvard, 16 in Spring Grove and 10 in Richmond.

Illinois' third-quarter home foreclosure activity rose 31 percent compared to the same period last year.

RealtyTrac shows Illinois with 42,176 foreclosure filings from July through September. That represents one in every 126 housing units — the fourth-highest rate in the nation.

That rate is almost 4 percent higher than in the second quarter of this year. On a monthly basis, Illinois foreclosures dropped 20 percent in September compared to August.

Filings include default notices, auction-sale notices and bank repossessions.

Florida had the nation's highest third-quarter foreclosure rate — one in every 117 housing units. Arizona and California also have foreclosure rates higher than Illinois.

Nationally, toreclosure filings dropped to a five-year low in September as fewer homes were on track to be seized by lenders.

It was the second-consecutive monthly decline in filings, although there remains a sharp divergence along state lines.

On a national level, overall foreclosure filings last month — including home repossessions — fell 7 percent from August and 16 percent from September 2011. There were 180,427 foreclosure filings reported for September, the fewest since July 2007 in the midst the housing market bust.

The number of homes entering the foreclosure process, so-called foreclosure starts, fell to 87,066 in September, down 12 percent from August and 15 percent from a year earlier. It was the second-straight month of declines following three months of increases, Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac reported.
