20 more charges in ‘obit’ burglaries

JOHNSBURG – Twenty additional charges have been filed against a man and woman who allegedly used obituaries to pick targets for burglaries.

Jacquelyn S. Buchholz, 24, and Jason K. Werner, 26, both of 108 Pleasant View Drive, near Johnsburg, were arrested Sept. 21 after the burglary of a Barrington home where they thought no one was home, authorities said.

The owner chased Buchholz out of a window and she dropped her cellphone in the area, law officers said.

McHenry County sheriff’s investigators said they have linked Buchholz and Werner to five other burglaries that occurred during wakes or funeral services, according to a news release.

Each now faces an additional five counts of both residential burglary and theft.

Buchholz and Werner remain in the Cook County Jail on $150,000 bond and later will be transferred to the McHenry County Jail.

Numerous items that were reported stolen in the break-ins have been recovered at pawn shops and gold-buying franchises in Lake County, authorities said.
