Founders’ Days to dawn at new location for '13

ALGONQUIN – Founders’ Days is set to have a new home in 2013.

Because Towne Park is closed for the construction of the Algonquin Western Bypass, a new location was needed for the annual festival.

The Founders’ Days Committee and village staff settled on Algonquin Lakes Park.

The Committee of the Whole last week gave its approval to the Founders’ Days Committee to begin planning the event at Algonquin Lakes Park, Assistant to the Village Manager Mike Kumbera said in an email.

The Village Board will formally vote on the plan at its meeting Tuesday.

Three other parks also were considered: Presidential Park, Kelleher Park and Spella Park.

Towne Park is expected to be closed until summer 2014.

The closure is necessary for the construction of the Western Bypass, along with a new 100-space parking lot, realignment of Crystal Creek, construction of a new pedestrian bridge and integration of the park with the Prairie Path recreational trail.

Algonquin Lakes Park, 700 Lake Plumleigh Way, has ample parking and will not require street closures, Kumbera said.

“The Founders’ Days Committee will still have to come back to the Village Board for formal approval of their special event permit for the festival at that location once they have finalized the specifics for the festival,” Kumbera said in an email.

The annual event is held the last full weekend in July.

“It’s the first time they’ve held it somewhere other than Towne Park,” Kumbera said.

Whether Founders’ Days will return to Towne Park after the bypass construction has not been determined, and it will have to be discussed between the Village Board and Founders’ Day Committee, Kumbera said.
