KANKAKEE (AP) — Kankakee police say they are holding a suspect in the stabbing death of an 81-year-old doctor and the wounding of his wife.
Dr. James Goldenstein was found dead early Friday in his home. His 81-year-old wife, Betty, is reported in stable condition in Riverside Medical Center.
Kankakee Police Chief Larry Regnier said 35-year-old Phillip Horrell is being held on a preliminary charge of first-degree murder pending the filing of formal charges. Investigators did not provide a motive for the attack.
Stacey Solano with the Illinois Department of Corrections said Horrell was discharged Wednesday from Dixon Correctional Center after serving time for burglary and other charges.
Regnier says police found Horrell, who was suffering from several stab wounds and is hospitalized, two blocks from the crime scene.
