Dorr Township moving to bigger town hall location

WOODSTOCK – Dorr Township will begin accepting bids Nov. 9 for the town hall building the municipality has occupied for nearly 35 years.

The township bought a 10,800-square-foot new building at 1039 Lake Ave., Woodstock, earlier this year.

Bids for the building at 140 Newell St. will be opened Nov. 15. The minimum bid is $180,000 for the 1,600-square-foot space, Township Supervisor Bob Pierce said.

“We needed more space,” Pierce said. “The [Woodstock] Food Pantry [is in] a cubicle on the second floor now. They’re going to have their own food pantry on the ground floor.”

The township bought the new building, which is under construction, for $525,000, and expects to occupy it in late December or early January. It will include a boardroom, community room and meeting space for needs-based assistance programs and room for the Woodstock Food Pantry, whose staff currently operates out of a cubicle, Pierce said.

Extra space is needed in every department, he added. “We have records and boxes on top of cabinets because we don’t have room,” he said.

“We do not have a private area for discussing assistance to needy people,” Pierce said. “The new building will have that confidential area.”

Pierce said the food pantry is one of the biggest reasons for the move.

Karen Myers of the Woodstock Food Pantry, 226 Washington St., said the organization has needed more space since needs in the area started increasing about five years ago.

She said the space in the new town hall will be about three times the pantry’s current space.

“We’ll have more room for storage now,” she said.
