Human services appeal

To the Editor:

In light of the upcoming elections, I would like to share with you the lack of results that have been produced by our current elected representatives. Although the staff at Family Alliance is committed to the people we serve, it has become more and more difficult to continue to provide mental health, wellness and memory care services for our community of adults age 50 and over.

Decisions of the current legislative body have negatively affected this community as follows:

• Our state contract has been cut by 84.5 percent over the past three years.

• We need $2.24 million to fully fund our program.

• Our bills to the state have not been paid in 180 days.

• Those outstanding payments from the state total $135,000.

Family Alliance staff has not received a cost-of-living raise in four years, but continue to provide high-quality, effective services to the community. We are appealing to our representatives and to all those who vote for them to consider social services in your decision-making.

If you’re a voter, consider those who support social services and vote for them. If you are an elected representative, please remember those who depend on our services; caregivers who can only continue to work if their family member has somewhere to go, persons who are challenged by mental illness or traumatic brain injury, and those experiencing physical and cognitive impairments. Please be their voice.
