WOODSTOCK – It’s Oak-tober at The Land Conservancy of McHenry County. Between now and the end of the month, there are two ways residents can help with oak conservation in the county.
From 2 to 6 p.m. today, there will be an oak savanna reforestation party near Harvard.
So far this month, 180 oak seedlings have been planted on about 3.5 acres that once was part of a vast oak woodland. Volunteers will help plant an additional 100 oak seedlings. Volunteers should wear clothes appropriate for the weather and sturdy footwear. All tools are provided; no experience is necessary. Refreshments will be provided, and pizza will be served at the end of the event.
Volunteers will gather at 8501 White Oaks Road, Harvard, and carpool to the planting site, so participants should arrive by 2 p.m. From Harvard, take 173 west into Chemung. Turn right (north) onto White Oaks Road and go about 2.7 miles. The parking lot is on the left at McHenry County Nursery.
Through Wednesday, TLC has oak seedlings for sale. Bur, red and swamp white species are available in four sizes ranging from $20 to $75. Pickup will be at TLC’s office, 4622 Dean St., Woodstock from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 27.
To place an order, visit www.conservemc.org or call 815-337-9502. Thirty percent of the sale price of each tree goes to support TLC’s oak conservation program. The remainder covers the cost of growing the trees.
The Land Conservancy of McHenry County is a nonprofit organization that works with landowners and communities to preserve and restore land for the benefit of future generations.
