To the Editor:
The picture on the front page of the Northwest Herald on Oct. 18 should be sent to every single politician in the U.S. as an example of how politicians should conduct themselves.
In the picture were Democrat Jack Franks and Republican Mike Tryon. The picture was taken during a debate between the two concerning a local issue about which they disagree.
In the photo, Tryon is speaking into the microphone making a point, while Franks is seated directly adjacent to him. Both are jabbing their index fingers in the air, apparently trying to make their respective points.
But the most impressive part of the photo is that both of the men had huge smiles on their faces and twinkles in their eyes as they debated each other. It was clear from that photo that the men, although debating opposite sides of the issue vigorously, both had respect and were giving respect to one another.
It was a wonderful photo capturing the true spirit of what intellectual debate should look like. All of these politicians who we see on TV, where all they do is bash their opponents, could learn an awful lot from this great photo of our two local politicians.
Kudos to both men!
