To the Editor:
The first sentence of the Northwest Herald’s endorsement of Rep. Randy Hultgren used what has become right-wing code for the wealthy: job creator. It’s not like I was confused that the Northwest Herald was starting to lean to the left, but I always thought of it as a fair-minded, just-to-the-right-of-center newspaper.
I hear that in the newspaper business, in order to grab the readers’ attention, you have to do it in the first paragraph. With your endorsement of Hultgren, you certainly accomplished the goal.
I have no problem with wealthy people. I’d like to become one myself. But the possession of wealth does not mean one is a “job creator.” It’s certainly easier to create jobs when you have money, but you have to have the will to use it that way.
To date, most of the wealthy people have been sitting on the sidelines while the rest of us fight over what jobs there are. To be fair, it’s not most of the wealthy people, but rather the people with the most wealth.
So, Northwest Herald, do you think you might consider returning to the right-center of the road to at least give the impression of being even-handed?
