To the Editor:
As the election draws closer, I think people need to take a long hard look at the referendum to create a county executive. I was surprised to learn that it doesn’t eliminate the position of County Board chairman but instead adds a whole new layer of government. I do not believe you could possibly argue that this would not create bigger and more expensive government.
The fact that McHenry County government is in better financial shape, better managed and a more effective operational entity than any other I can think of should make people question what is behind this proposal. Certainly the federal government, state of Illinois and most school districts have problems that pale in comparison.
I think that County Board Chairman Ken Koehler and other county leaders should be commended for setting an example of how a unit of government should be run. I urge a “no” vote on this bad idea.
