WOODSTOCK – A $1.2 million demolition and reconstruction project at the Dorr Township Road District is nearing completion.
Construction crews knocked down the old facility, which stored rock salt and contained a room for mixing salt brine solution, to make room for three new buildings.
One, at 3,600 square feet, will store the district’s five trucks. The road district, 12322 Davis Road, Woodstock, previously rented space to house the trucks.
Highway Commissioner Tom Thurman said the move will help the department, which maintains 35 miles of roads, run more efficiently.
Dorr Township implemented a brine solution system for treating wintery roads last year, copying the success of McHenry County’s program. The district mixes salt brine, sugar beet juice and liquid calcium chloride. The new facilities are built to accommodate the system.
“It doesn’t cost a lot to make a gallon of salt brine,” Thurman said. “We can apply that along with the bulk rock salt and reduce the amount of bulk rock salt to the road.”
A second 3,600-square-foot building has truck-washing bays and is where the salt brine solution will be mixed. The system is built to recycle water, used in washing the trucks, into the brine solution.
At 4,800-square-feet, the largest of the three buildings will store rock salt. The district typically has gone through 1,500 to 3,000 tons of rock salt per winter, Thurman said.
The project is expected to be finished in late November, about seven months after a late-April groundbreaking and 10 years after the district started putting away money for construction. It originally was set for completion in October, and is coming in slightly over budget – about $30,000, Thurman said.
The road district once thought it would relocate its facilities, he said. But, “The electors thought we would be best served by staying where we were at. We were able to use what we have. It’s just a little cramped.
“This is going to greatly help our whole program,” Thurman said. “We think we can be much more efficient.”
