CRYSTAL LAKE – The parking lot for one of McHenry County College’s main buildings will be restricted when emergency work to repair a sanitary sewer line begins Monday.
The college experienced a sewer backup in the men’s bathroom in Building B near the commons area last month. A contractor video scoped the sewer line and discovered the 30-year-old, 8-inch pipe was underwater beneath the Building B parking lot.
“There is a great sense of urgency to perform this repair before 1) winter arrives 2) asphalt companies close for the season in November and 3) the opening of the new production kitchen and culinary lab,” President Vicky Smith wrote in a memo to board members.
On Friday, entrance No. 1 will be closed for the day. Construction is expected to continue the week of Nov. 11 and will restrict parking in some areas of parking lot B.
The Lucas Road entrance, or No. 3, will remain open throughout construction.
Construction is expected to be finished by Nov. 28.
Work will replace the sewer line with a 10-inch pipe through the parking lot to the city hookup on Route 14.
The MCC Board of Trustees approved spending $180,340 on the emergency repair at a special meeting in October. Funds came from a contingency account in the college’s operations and maintenance fund.
HR Green in McHenry conducted the engineering and architecture and prepared bids for the work.
