Legion looking to ID veterans' graves
ALGONQUIN – Lake in the Hills American Legion Post 1231 is working to make sure all veterans buried in the Algonquin cemetery are properly recognized with an American flag at their graves every Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
The Legion is in the process of researching, checking and looking for all locations of every veteran in the cemetery.
"Old cemetery maps have served us well since the 1950s, but sad to say, we have overlooked some deserving veterans," Legion member Jim Mertz wrote in a letter to the Northwest Herald.
For Veterans Day, flags will be displayed on every veteran's grave site listed on the Legion's maps. The flags are planned to be on display between Thursday and Nov. 14.
People who know of veterans buried in the Algonquin cemetery and do not see flags over their graves during that period should cal Mertz at 847-658-3363 or the Lake in the Hills American Legion at 847-658-2010 to have the veteran added to the map.
The Legion will need the names of the veterans, the war or wars they participated in, the veterans' terms of service, and locations in the cemetery.
