To the Editor:
For your conscience to work properly, it must be correctly informed. For Catholics, a well-formed conscience never will contradict Catholic moral teaching. If we are true, faithful Catholics, our consciences will be formed according to the truths taught us in our faith. Unfortunately today, many Catholics have not formed their consciences adequately regarding key moral issues.
Intrinsically evil actions are those that fundamentally conflict with the moral law. It is a serious sin for Catholics to deliberately endorse or promote any of these actions. Catholics should know that directly targeting an innocent life in abortion is an intrinsic evil.
Abortion is a “non-negotiable” moral principle. To ignore the right to life means no other rights matter, for without life first, how can there be other rights? So abortion trumps all other issues.
When a mother learns she is pregnant, her offspring has a beating heart, organs have developed, her unique fingerprints are visible and she is moving! This is a live, growing human being! Mothers now are lucky enough to see their little one in an ultrasound.
In January, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a mandate under the Affordable Care Act that requires all employer health plans to provide free contraceptives, sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs, regardless of any moral or religious objections, or face crippling fines.
Catholic schools, hospitals and charities are not considered sufficiently religious to qualify for the mandate’s narrow religious exemption. Catholics must fight this assault on our religious freedom!
