Chief accused of illegally using evidence items

NEW ATHENS – A southwestern Illinois police chief is accused of stealing electronic equipment from the New Athens Police Department's evidence room.

Prosecutors in St. Clair County have charged 27-year-old Dallas Hill with three felony counts.

Authorities say he took an Apple iPod and iPad between July 5 and Sept. 19, and he's facing two counts of official misconduct. Each of the felonies is punishable by up to five years in prison.

It's not immediately clear who is running the department in light of Hill's legal troubles.

Hill turned himself in on Monday's charges and was released on bond.

A message left Monday with Hill at the New Athens Police Department was not returned. He does not have a listed home telephone number.
