Medieval barbarians

To the Editor:

In the “The Talk” section of the Nov. 2 edition of the Chicago Tribune, the short article “Sprucing up for the holidays” shows a picture of a crane lifting a freshly sawed-off 63-year-old, 64-foot-tall spruce tree.

Are we still such a hoard of medieval barbarians running around half-naked who find it fun and necessary to kill a healthy and beautiful tree to celebrate an important, family-oriented religious holiday? Really?

A better headline for this article would have been, “The brainless act of the day.” Mayor Rahm Emanuel, did you really need that tree? Why not institute a “pardoned tree” tradition similar to the one in the White House on Thanksgiving? Any comments, Mayor Emanuel?
