State Election

Some voters stand by indicted candidate Smith

CHICAGO – Voters on Chicago's West Side have turned out to cast ballots in a race where the favored candidate is a former state representative indicted this year on bribery charges.

After voting Tuesday, a 44-year-old engineer said she voted against Derrick Smith. Shalanda Greene says the Chicago Democrat violated his constituents' trust.

Smith was booted out of the House in August after he was indicted on federal bribery charges. He remained on the ballot and can retake his old seat if he wins.

He still has supporters.

Retired postal worker Wallace Thomas voted for Smith. He says Smith is honest and was framed.

Smith showed up at the same polling station. He's denied any wrongdoing and told a reporter Tuesday that people in his district understand he's innocent until proven guilty.
