Donations sought for Operation Christmas Child

Volunteers with Operation Christmas Child, the largest Christmas project of its kind, are filling shoe box gifts with toys, school supplies and hygiene items for children in need overseas.

The year-round project of international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse is headed by Franklin Graham and is ramping up.

Area businesses, churches and community groups aim to collect 22,500 gift-filled shoe boxes during National Collection Week, which starts Monday.

Anyone can drop off a packed shoe box at one of two area locations. The shoe box gifts will be hand-delivered to children in 100 countries around the world.

Donations will be collected in McHenry County at:

• The Gibbs residence, 311 Briarwood Lane, Algonquin. Donations will be accepted from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Nov. 16; from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 17; from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 18; and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 19.

• Woodstock Assembly of God, 1201 Dean St., Woodstock. Donations will be accepted from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday; from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 17; from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Nov. 18; and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 19.

Operation Christmas Child uses tracking technology to allow participants to “follow” their box to the destination country.
