Altar of partisanship

To the Editor:

In an Oct. 21 opinion column endorsing Mitt Romney, the Northwest Herald Editorial Board stated: “Frankly, we can’t say we are better off today than we were four years ago.”

In October 2008, the economy was in free fall. Wall Street was on the verge of following Lehman Brothers into bankruptcy; we were hemorrhaging hundreds of thousands of jobs every month; the American auto industry was on the brink of collapse, threatening millions of additional jobs; American workers were watching their retirement accounts shrivel into lunch money; and credit was frozen.

The economic climate in October 2012 was exponentially better than that of October 2008. No objective comparison could find otherwise. I understand that the Northwest Herald depends on a Republican county for its advertising dollars and must invoke a certain deference, but I think you damage your standing as journalists when you demonstrate that you are willing to sacrifice your credibility on the altar of partisanship.
