Diabetes health clinic planned

ALGONQUIN – A Diabetes Health Clinic is set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Outpatient Center, 2284 County Line Road, Algonquin.

The clinic provides a screening for blood glucose level.

Participants should note that screenings such as the finger stick to check blood-glucose level and the A1C level test require fasting for 12 hours beforehand for accurate readings. But take regular medications as prescribed.

Dr. Daniel So, an endocrinologist, and other Advocate Good Shepherd diabetes educators, will be available for questions and provide one-on-one consultation.  Follow-up screenings will be scheduled if necessary.

In America, more than 25 million people are diagnosed with diabetes and a startling 79 million people are diagnosed as prediabetic.

Prediabetes is classified by higher than normal blood sugar levels; this condition is a precursor to Type 2 diabetes. Although it may take several years to become diabetic, unchecked pre-diabetes can threaten long-term heart health and the circulatory system.

The condition can be reversed if blood sugar levels subside. The best way to combat prediabetes is to foster a healthy lifestyle.

The Diabetes Health Clinic requires a $10 fee and registration.

To register, call 1-800-323-8622, mention the class code 3D04, or go to www.advocatehealth.com/gshp and click on “I need a class or support group”, and type the class code into the keyword box.
