Man gets 38-years for 2008 Aurora murder

ST. CHARLES – A Melrose Park man has been sentenced to 38 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the 2008 death of an Aurora man during a botched drug deal.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joseph McMahon said 24-year-old Jorge Diaz was sentenced Wednesday by Circuit Judge Timothy Sheldon.

Prosecutors say that in October 2008, Diaz and another man went to a home in Aurora to buy cocaine, but actually intended to rob the drug dealers at gunpoint.

They say Diaz’s accomplice, 28-year-old Hector Valtierrez, shot one of the drug dealers, who in turn shot and killed Valtierrez.

The dealer, 32-year-old Juan R. Herrera, was convicted of murder and sentenced last month to 46 years in prison. Diaz was charged because Valtierrez was murdered during an armed robbery.
