Our view: Thank you to veterans

Election Day, Nov. 6, and Veterans Day, Nov. 11, are closely juxtaposed this year.

In campaign ads, candidates on the Election Day ballot often declare they are “fighters” and are willing to “fight for you.”

Military veterans must shake their heads at such talk.

Those dedicated men and women know all too well what fighting for the people means. They’ve done it. Their service to the nation preserves our freedom and protects our democracy, with all its flaws.

While candidates are quick to tout their records, you don’t often see that with military veterans. It’s left to family members and friends to point with pride to the service records of loved ones.

They are as humble as they are brave and disciplined.

McHenry County has had its share of tragedy involving members of the military since the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq began after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Seven active members of the military from the county have been killed since then while serving overseas.

The stories of their heroism have been told, and deservedly so.

Most veterans go unsung, however.

This weekend offers all of us a great opportunity to show these heroes how much we appreciate them and the sacrifices they’ve made for their country.

We encourage our readers to seek out veterans and thank them.

Consider, also, attending a Veterans Day observance. Some area programs are Saturday, some are on Veterans Day itself (Sunday), while others will be Monday.

To all area military veterans, we offer our profound thanks.
