ALGONQUIN – Janet Rabig of Huntley, owner of Scissor Happy Hair Studio in Algonquin, has taken the spirit of holiday giving to the next level. For the month of November, every guest who brings in a donation for the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Food Pantry will receive $5 in Beauty Bucks to use on services and a turkey with their name to hang on the wall of the salon (one certificate per drop off, but multiple drop offs are encouraged).

“A friend and client of mine volunteers at the food pantry every week,” Rabig said. “She explained that they were serving probably more than over 300 local families on a regular basis and it just felt like there was a need there and that’s where I needed to put my energy.”

Giving back to the community is not a novel concept for Rabig. As a new business owner just starting out in 2011, she offered free haircuts to those looking for work. Knowing money was tight for many families, she felt driven to help those who needed to look great for job interviews.

More recently, to honor last month’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Rabig participated in SexyHair’s nationwide Cut-a-Thon, donating $10 from every haircut to Look Good… Feel Better, a nonprofit organization that helps more than 50,000 women who are undergoing cancer cope with the devastating appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. In addition to the cut-a-thon donations, Rabig donated her tips and any additional monies from her guests to reach her goal of $500 for the month.

“I felt like I was given the opportunity to do hair so that I could reach out to people,” Rabig said. “Every day I have clients sit in my chair and I listen to their stories. Everyone needs something. On the most basic level, I can help people feel and look beautiful. In return, my clients give me so much, from inspiration to helping me put food on the table for my family. Now that I’m on my own with my own shop, I can really give back the way that I want to.”

Scissor Happy Hair Studio is located in the In Style Suites Complex at 2316 Esplanade Drive, Suite 107, in Algonquin. The studio is open for appointments and donations Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
