Rock Island man convicted in death of infant son

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — A 20-year-old Rock Island man has been convicted of first-degree murder in the death of his 4-month-old son.

Authorities say Lyrik Phillips died in December 2010 after suffering multiple skull fractures and bleeding in his brain.

A jury deliberated for about five hours Tuesday before convicting Demetrius Phillips. He faces between 20 and 60 years in prison when he's sentenced on Jan. 11.

During his trial, Phillips testified that he never harmed his son and felt forced into giving a false confession to police.

Police officials say Phillips told officers he was frustrated when he threw his son onto a bed, where the infant bounced and hit his head on a table before falling to the floor.
