Styf: If Bears lose, it won’t be on Campbell

After the debacle that was the start of Week 1 against Indianapolis, that’s the closest they’ve gotten to greatness.

Besides that, they’ve been mediocre.

Now, we likely get to see the other side.

I fully expect Jason Campbell to start Monday’s game at San Francisco, though I clearly don’t have any inside information into the matter.

Campbell doesn’t have an elite arm, he can’t make all the throws, but he might be exactly what the Bears need.

He isn’t afraid to throw the ball downfield – we saw him do it to Brandon Marshall in the muddy mess that was Sunday night’s loss to the Texans.

Campbell won’t be great, but he might be enough.

And he won’t try to make the Superman throws that have gotten Jay Cutler into trouble so many time.

Remember, this is the first time in his career Campbell has been a backup.

Until he broke his collarbone last year and the Oakland Raiders overspent for Carson Palmer, he had led those Raiders to a 3-2 start. They were 8-8 in 2010 and he spent his first five seasons starting for the Redskins.

It’s not debatable whether Campbell’s better than Caleb Hanie. That’s easy.

The real question is whether you’ll be missing Cutler after Monday night.

Jay will come back, and he’ll start.

But Campbell might just make you think.

What if the Bears had something consistent?

What if they had another game manager?

I know you’ve seen it before, and it never fully worked.

But maybe Campbell is just that guy. Or maybe he won’t be enough.

Either way, you don’t have to worry about Campbell being the reason the Bears won’t win Monday night. The offense, to this point, wasn’t doing anything great to start.

Cutler has that great fourth quarter rating, but until then he’s been pretty bad, unless he’s given chance after chance on a short field like what happened in Tennessee.

I’m confident that Monday night, if anything, will give you a chance to ask more questions. And wonder what life would be like with this great defense, and without Cutler.
