Honoring lost children

To the Editor:

Each year, on the second Sunday of December, bereaved parents come together to honor their children in The Compassionate Friends’ Worldwide Candlelighting.

The motto of this ceremony is, “That their light might shine forever.” In each time zone around the world, candles will be lit at 7 p.m. to remember children lost too soon.

The McHenry County Chapter of The Compassionate Friends will hold this candlelighting at 6 p.m. Dec. 9 in the community room at the First United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, located at the corner of Dole and Crystal Lake avenues.

We encourage parents, grandparents, friends and family to attend this event to share their memories, their grief and their healing as they gather with others who are walking this journey.

So that others might “meet” your child, please bring a favorite picture of them, along with any poems or letters or memories you would like to share. If you are facing a birthday or anniversary in December, please bring along anything you would like to share commemorating those events as well.

A pot-luck dinner is planned, and many bring their child’s favorite dish to pass. We hope you can gather with us for a night of remembering and sharing. The motto of The Compassionate Friends begins with the words, “We need not walk alone.”

This is a night that reminds us we can lean on one another and that our child’s light still shines.
