Good Shepherd to host talk about chronic pain

BARRINGTON – Long-term or chronic pain can take a physical, financial and emotional toll on pain sufferers and their family members.

"Learn to Manage Your Chronic Pain," part of a fall lecture series, will be presented from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, 450 W. Route 22 in Barrington.

The event will feature guest speaker Dr. J. Nnaemeka Onwuta, a board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist with Advocate Medical Group. Onwuta will discuss aspects of living with pain, its causes, as well as management techniques and coping mechanisms.

Research over the past 25 years has shown that pain is influenced by emotional and social factors. These factors need to be addressed along with the physical causes of pain.

Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation are vital to managing chronic pain. If natural remedies are not enough, patients may consider acupuncture, steroid injections, or medication. At the lecture, Onwuta will discuss the benefits and potential side effects of each treatment option.

The lecture is free to attend and will take place in the Prairie/Meadow rooms at Good Shepherd Hospital. A light meal will be provided.
