School lunch policy

To the Editor:

I have two daughters, both attend high school in District 155. Both are lactose intolerant. In previous years, if they chose to purchase lunch, all they needed to do was request juice or water instead of milk and they would be given the substitute. Imagine their surprise when this year, they were told no substitutions were allowed without a doctor’s note. A high school senior and sophomore are not allowed to be trusted to know what they can and cannot put into their own bodies.

When told this story, I certainly thought my word would be enough. A parent should be able to decide what her child should and should not be able to consume. Upon calling the school and telling them, I was told that thanks to Michelle Obama and her new lunch initiatives, no substitutions are allowed without a doctor’s note.
