St. Joe’s tips Notre Dame in overtime
NEW YORK – Ronald Roberts had 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead Saint Joseph’s to a 79-70 overtime victory over No. 20 Notre Dame on Friday night in the semifinals of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Friday night at Barclays Center.
Roberts scored the first seven points of the overtime as the Hawks pulled away, outscoring the Fighting Irish 13-4 in the extra 5 minutes.
Saint Joseph’s closed regulation on an 8-0 run to tie it at 66.
The Hawks (2-0) will play Florida State in tonight’s championship game. The Seminoles (3-0) beat BYU, 88-70.
Jack Cooley had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Fighting Irish (2-1), who didn’t score over the final 4 minutes of regulation and first 4 minutes of overtime.
New Mexico 66, Illinois-Chicago 59: At St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Kendall Williams scored 23 points and New Mexico (2-0) withstood a spirited comeback bid by Illinois-Chicago (1-1) at the Paradise Jam.
Hayden Humes led UIC with 16 points.
W. Michigan 81, Loyola 71: At Tampa, Fla., senior forward Nate Hutcheson scored 30 points and had nine rebounds to lead Western Michigan (2-1) over Loyola (2-1) in the South Florida Invitational.
Ben Averkamp paced Loyola with 24 points.
W. Illinois 67, Buffalo 58: At Evansville, Ind., Ceola Clark scored 19 points, Don McAvoy added nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds, and Western Illinois (2-1) beat Buffalo (1-2) at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
E. Michigan 60, E. Illinois 52: At Ypsilanti, Mich., Derek Thompson scored 22 points to help lead Eastern Michigan (2-1) over Eastern Illinois (0-3) in EMU’s Ice Man Classic.
Sherman Blanford had 14 points and nine rebounds for Eastern Illinois.
Kent St. 92, Chicago St. 63: At Kent, Ohio, Devareaux Manley scored 20 points to lead Kent State (2-1) in a victory over Chicago State (1-2).
